Fragments within fragments, wholes within wholes, the kaleidoscopic nature of A Shaman's Journey Revealed Through Poetry is a book that can be read many ways. With few exceptions, in my experience, books on shamanism either fall on the side of scientific/academic, drowning in citations to the point of, who cares? or of drug-induced psychedelic memoirs. This collaboration of Gavriel Navarro and Norman W. Wilson PhD, two gentlemen with first-hand knowledge and experience of shamanism is, refreshingly, neither.To use poetry as a gateway for the possibility of the reader to walk the shaman's path is ingenious. I've read the book no fewer than seven times--first for enjoyment and then to look for cracks. My training in this field comes from western and central Canada, particularly the Cree First Nation and the Medicine Wheel; and the Meso-American nagual tradition and the Aztec-Maya 20-count. Authenticity in any circle recognizes itself in others. Indigenous traditions also share pitfalls, the most common being self importance and self-pity in near infinite gradations. Again, Gavriel and Norman's book deftly soars above and captures, lets go, alludes to, and recreates the often maddening (in a literal sense) the shaman's reality. They know what they are writing about!
The illustrations, quotations, and numeric count that accompany the titled poems correspond, in my opinion, to the Meso-American base-5 system of perception. More braided than linear, this cognitive system reinforces an experience at neurological, muscular-skeletal, vascular, and organic levels simultaneously. The flow through all strands is consistent, with enough imagery for the senses to enjoy, but not enough for the reader to grasp at the coat tail of an ego.
While the poems touch on a specific terrain, the Amazon, they source from the universal. What is true of the shaman is true of Creation. What is true of Creation is true of all of us. This is the message that quietly fluttered home to me, like a feather.
I highly recommend this book to anyone with a love of poetry, of indigenous traditions, or anyone in need of a reminder that we are all whole within the whole, immortal and infinite.
